San Diego Fort, Acapulco

The San Diego Fort is a maritime fortification of Spanish design located in the port of Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. It was built in the 17th century to protect the port from pirate attacks and plundering, and was also the scene of episodes in Mexico's history such as the Independence, the Second French Intervention and the Mexican Revolution.

It is the most relevant cultural historical monument of the region and one of the most important maritime fortresses along the Pacific Ocean after the Real Felipe in Peru and the Valdivia fort system in Chile. It has a geometric trace in the form of a pentagon or star of 5 peaks. It houses since 1986 the Historical Museum of Acapulco Fort of San Diego, currently under the administration of the National Institute of Anthropology and History, comprising thirteen exhibition halls.
