Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico

It is located in the heart of the second largest expanse of tropical forests in the Americas, second only to the Amazon jungle.

Calakmul is the largest archaeological site that testifies to the colonization of the territory, the growth of the population and the complex organization of state-societies with a wide variety of vestiges.
On June 21, 2014, the Ancient Mayan City and Protected Tropical Forests of Calakmul was inscribed as a Mixed Property (cultural and natural) on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the first Mexican Mixed Property registered by the international organization.

The registered area is located in the southern part of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve (decreed as a Reserve on May 23, 1989), and is considered the second largest extension of tropical forests in America and the best preserved in the region, with a total of 723 thousand hectares.
